Music as a non-pharmacological management tool for older adults

The power of music is undeniable. Since the beginning of time, we have used music as an outlet to express our feelings and cope. As western medicine begins to recognize the value of less traditional forms of treatment, we see this in particular tremendously benefiting older adults. 4 out of 5 older adults age 50 and older suffer from at least one or more chronic conditions. Many chronic conditions are not only physically painful, but they can also cause mental anguish. Feelings of depression and anxiety can often impact an older adult due to a multitude of reasons. As we age, the loss of control and autonomy is exceptionally mentally challenging. We can better support older adults by providing a more supportive environment that addresses the mental challenges of the aging and disease process. In both self-reported and physiological measures, post-operative patients indicated that music therapy reduced pain perception and the need for pharmaceutical interventions. Since many older adults experience GI motility issues, reducing pharmaceutical interventions can make a significant difference in the quality of life for older adults. Small bowel obstruction is one of the most frequent emergencies in general surgery, most commonly affecting older adults. Music can improve delayed colonic transit by reducing the need for pharmaceutical pain interventions and encouraging older adults who are inactive to be more active, which research demonstrates makes a meaningful difference in colonic transit times. Interestingly enough, musical pieces chosen by the patient are commonly, but not always, more effective than pieces selected by another person.

Older adults that participated in music interventions performed significantly better on standardized anxiety and depression tests. These improvements were clinically significant and maintained over a 9-month follow-up period. This is a highly effective type of intervention for homebound individuals.
